Feature length film
Sauna of the Dead feature length film for gay guys including zombies. Created by the director for a gay audience that will get some of the inside jokes
“I wanted to tell a story that maybe looks like just a bit of silly fun on the surface, but can be interpreted more meaningfully too. The meanness of people on Grindr and other hook-up apps is a constant topic of conversation with my friends. We’re endlessly fascinated and horrified by the casual rudeness and the irony of these people obviously wanting an intimate human connection of sorts but feeling the need to dress it up with lots of arrogant, offensive disclaimers. That’s the kind of guy the main character is meant to represent – the emotional Scrooge of generation Grindr.
“I thought zombies made a great metaphor for this single-minded, compulsive behaviour, treating others purely as pieces of meat for your gratification. Some people have commented that they think the metaphor extends to other issues within the scene such as chems and STDs, and I was aware of that potential, but it’s something I avoided touching on explicitly for this film. I was mainly interested in the zombies just as a monstrous exaggeration of how we can end up slaves to our hunger for easy gratification, and especially in the more anonymous contexts of apps or a sauna, lose our empathy and forget we’re dealing with real, other human beings.
“There was also a question of how to tell a story about zombies in a sauna that wasn’t just casually reinforcing the view that these places are scary, dangerous or full of predators. There’s enough people implying that as it is, and it’s not a view I share, so I wanted to find a way to structure the story so that it didn’t ultimately demonise saunas, and that was how it became more of a fable than a regular horror. It’s been done with great affection for these kinds of spaces. I think it’s really important to have queer spaces that operate on queer terms but, given the closure of London’s biggest sauna, Chariots Shoreditch, as well as many other venues, we can’t take for granted they will always be there. I was really inspired by the sauna’s potential as an exciting world of adventure.
“I know some people see saunas as seedy, but places are what you make them. That’s the point: the sauna itself is not inherently good or bad and I suppose I wanted to introduce a kind of innocence that people don’t normally associate with these places.”
